I started working with coach Emma and had immediate success. Good structure, sessions with purpose, regular feedback and adjustments as needed have been key. We don't just focus on running but all the other aspects that lead to performing. Positive energy from enjoyment, goal setting, mental tricks, nutrition, recovery and teamwork. All of these things helped me execute my plan in my 50K race. I've worked hard but alot smarter than before and looked after my mind and body along the way.

I met Emma a couple of years ago and have witnessed her achieve some epic goals in that time. So, when I saw that she was offering coaching, it was a no brainer to ask for her help for my very first 30km mountain race.
As someone who has run for fun for 3 years, I was kind of a novice with running lingo and coaching but from the very first phone call Emma made it all so easy to understand. An overview of my training plan and guidance on RPE and any other information that I needed was emailed to me before we got started. Each session was explained to a T and Emma was very responsive at answering any questions or queries that I had. I felt confident that I knew what to do for each session and the effort that I needed to put in. I absolutely loved the training plan itself. There were lots of new, spicy and exciting sessions, which kept it fun and interesting and got my legs and heart pumping. A recurring injury reappeared in week 2 and Emma was awesome at adapting my sessions to align with what my physio suggested, she did this with care and calm and made me feel at ease about being able to continue with the plan. We tracked my cycle for the 12 weeks of the training plan and were able to identify patterns of when I felt really 💩. We made note that in future easier/shorter sessions can be scheduled to suit the energy levels at that time of my cycle. This will be a game changer for being able to put my best efforts into my harder/longer sessions. Emma has a person-centered approach to coaching, she makes sure the plan fits your lifestyle and will change and adapt sessions if “life happens”. As we had not previously worked together, she was honest with me in saying that she did not know if that goal was achievable for me, but she assured me that she would do her best to get me there in good form. And that she did!! My fitness has improved, my confidence in climbing up and down mountains has improved, my confidence in running has improved AND I finished the event with a huge smile on my face!! If you’re looking for a coach to help you achieve your running goals, I highly recommend you get in contact with Emma. The only problem is, you may get hooked!! 🏔️ 🏃🏽♀️ 💕 Kimberley Gibbons-Hurinui |
When I started running to train for a marathon in late 2022, I never thought I'd need a coach. At 47 years old I thought there's no need. One and done was the motto. Complete Buller marathon 2023 then back to the couch. Fortunately the running bug got me and I've kept it up and now can't stop. Nothing physical or mental has got in the way, touch wood, to fully put me back on that couch. I then ran several marathons and an ultra or two. Basic plans off the internet downloaded and followed nearly to the letter. Running six days a week. I did wonder though during this time and all the km's I was wracking up, whether I should actually get an expert in the running field to peruse my story and tell me if I was doing it right or wrong.
I ummed and aghhed for nearly three years till I finally said I'll get a coach leading up to the South Island 100km ultra in 2025. I scoured the internet, coach after coach, NZ based and overseas. Then I spotted this lady running huge distances on a treadmill. Ultrarunner. And she was just starting out her career as a full time coach. Local too being on the coast. So for 10 weeks Emma slowed me down and sped me up. That's what it felt like. Put my running ideas to reason when I thought I could run this and then run that not long after. Having someone checking in regularly and about run specific stuff was something I realised I hadn't had. I had filled that void. And now it appears I've got faster! 1st time on the podium in anything. 1st in my age group and 3rd overall in the South Island 100km Ultra. What a weird feeling. It actually gave me a mental shock during the race when I was told I was near the front. Never had that before in any sport. The running journey continues with plans for a miler next year. 'Smaller' races in between with more marathons and ultras to do leading to that miler. I'm hoping that despite what life throws at me and family, Emma Timmis coach will be there guiding the way. I approached Emma at the start of the year with a rather ambitious goal of competing in and finishing 100 miler which I considered the Holy Grail of running distances.
After getting the usual background information about what I've done before, distances I run, etc she started putting together a training plan. What impressed me was that she also took into consideration my lifestyle and responsibilities and tried to make it all work in together as much as possible.
Once receiving it I had a million questions, Emma was one step ahead of me and sent an email describing the point of each type of training run, the distances and reasoning behind it all. Emma never (well hopefully..lol) got sick of my million and one probably silly to her questions and was always helpful and without a doubt always had a good idea or suggestion. She touched base regularly to make sure that I staying on track which is very much appreciated. I enjoyed the training plan so much that one of the hardest parts of it was the tapering off and not doing as much running.
Because it wasn't a short distance I was training for, nutrition actually played a large role in to being able to finish successfully and once again Emma's experience and advice proved to be priceless! On the day of the race I couldn't have felt more confident in myself as I had definitely put in the hard yards thanks to Emma's guidance. Lucky for me Emma was passing through on the way to a race that she had entered and popped in to say hi and ran a few kms with me, this gave me an incredible boost and although it was not expected from her I don't think she realised just how much of a boost this gave me. In the end I managed to finished my race about 2 hours quicker than planned!
The training plan and Emma's advice had helped me achieve my crazy goal and to say it helped would be the biggest understatement in the world, if anything it's now made me realise that with the right plan and the right mindset anything is possible and I'm now about start training for an even longer race. I cannot recommend Emma enough to anyone looking for a coach or training plan and to be honest I have to say that she is simply one of the most incredible people that I've ever met my life.
